Now this makes some sense.

The reason Stefan was a ripper/couldn’t get enough blood was because his “shadow self” was literally starving for it? That’s probably not it at all, but that would be interesting. I may watch next season just to see how this whole thing plays out.

This is why Stefan is perfect (and why Elena is a dumbass). He always demonstrates grace and maturity in the face of heart-break. We all know how Damon would have responded had Elena chosen Stefan.
